The Gupta Empire came to India in the third half of the third century CE. The Gupta Empire was very widespread due to the earlier ruling of the Mauryan Empire, it also had major breakthroughs in science and mathematics. Hence, the Guptas were well known for their scientific advancements those days. So, what two important astronomical discoveries did the Guptas make? They led India forwards with its inventions but what two inventions did the Gupta contribute to ancient India? If you do not know we will tell you what and how.

    1. What Two Important Astronomical Discoveries did the Guptas make?

Science during the Gupta period was the best achievement of those days. Some inventions created the groundwork for Guptas in the field of science. The two main developments of astronomy were:

    • Aryabhata’s theory said that the Earth is round and not flat.
    • Aryabhata also demonstrated the fact that the earth revolves around its own axis.

    2. What Two Inventions did the Gupta contribute to Ancient India for Science?

We all know what two important astronomical discoveries did the Guptas make during those times. But do you know what two inventions did the Gupta contribute to ancient India?

Inventions and contributions are important achievements in science. The best development was made in metallurgy which is clearly shown in the Iron Pillar. This pillar shows the magnificent art of the Guptas. These are the two inventions that were found during those times:

    • Mathematics
    • Astronomy

We should also know what is the Gupta Empire best known for. Let’s see in the upcoming segments. (See What are the Characteristics of Ancient Art?)

    3. What Two Inventions did the Gupta contribute to Ancient India in Terms of Literature?

We all know during those times, people put their effort to grow literature and art. The same was with the Gupta dynasty where literature and art were given a lot of prominence. The primary themes in literature were poetry and some erotic comedies. Sanskrit literature was very popularly used amongst the Gupta rulers. The inventions for literature include secular literature, which has poetry, and drama in it. (See How did Religion Influence the Mauryan Empire?)

    4. What is the Gupta Empire Best Known for?

Every empire has its own distinct quality for which it is known like some are experts in trade or infrastructure. Similarly, the Gupta Empire was known for its advanced culture and outstanding arts. The Guptas, however, were masters in architecture, literature, painting, and sculpture which flourished during their time. Artists of those times wrote poetries, dramas, prose, and other mythological drams. They also played with words to create humor and some academic essays were written as well. 5. Why the Gupta Period is called Golden Age?

The Gupta Empire due to its creative advancements has developed into Golden Age. They thrived in the Golden age and made it a very remarkable success until their downfall. The Guptas were known for the Golden age era because of their significant rise and inventions in India during their rule. They advanced in the field of science, tech, Engineering, art, and literature. We also know what two important astronomical discoveries did the Guptas make. (See How was Rome a Site of Encounter?)

    6. How did Aryabhata propound the Mathematical Theory?

It was said that the decimal system was introduced during those times. The Gupta period does not have evidence that says Aryabhata created Zero. They had the alphabetical order to show numbers. It is believed that pi was created during the Gupta period. Aryabhata propounded the theory of five significant rules which helps in calculating the diameter of a surface. He proved the pi in Europe in 1761. Aryabhata also developed trigonometry. This is marked as the best development in the Gupta period.

The most important theory during the Guptas’ reign was the Aryabhata theory. If you see, the answer to what two important astronomical discoveries did the Guptas make includes Aryabhata’s theory of Earth. He said Earth is not flat but round and proved astronomically that the earth revolves around its own axis. The Gupta age was the golden age due to their achievements in different fields. The Gupta Empire is best known for its arts and culture. (See Who was the Greatest King of ALL TIME?)
