It is in fact Sudan that has the maximum number of pyramids. In Sudan, there have been more than 200 pyramids found. These pyramids were not built by ancient Egyptians. They were built by the members of the Kush Kingdom, which was an ancient Egyptian civilization that ruled along the Nile River.

In India, pyramids are not found in the exact form they are in Egypt. Pyramids in India are present in the form of religious shrines. These structures are commonly found in temples in South India. Srirangam Temple in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu is one example of a pyramid-like structure. Other temples with pyramid-like structures are Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. These giant granite structures, built during the Chola empire, are still in use today.

7. Which are the Oldest Pyramids?

The pyramids of Egypt are the oldest in the world. The Pyramid of Djoser or Zoser is believed to be the oldest in the world. It is even older than the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Pyramid of Djoser dates back to 2630 BCE while the Pyramid of Giza was started to be constructed in 2560 BCE. The Pyramid of Djoser lies 10 miles south of the largest pyramid in the world, the Great Pyramid of Giza. Other than these, the Pyramid of Menkaure and the Pyramid of Khafre are considered to be some of the oldest ones.

8. Who Built the First Pyramids?

The Egyptians were the first to build pyramids. The oldest pyramid in the world, the Pyramid of Djoser, was commissioned by Djoser or Netjerikhet, the best-known pharaoh of the third dynasty of Egypt. His royal architect, Imhotep, was given the task to build the pyramid, which he successfully did. Then, the subsequent pyramids were commissioned and constructed by emperors and their successors of the coming dynasties. (See What are the Seven wonders of the World?)

9. Can You Build Pyramids Today?

With the technology present today, it is possible to build massive structures but it will be very tough. There is not any defined way to do it because even after so much research, scientists have not yet identified the exact way in which these ancient pyramids were built. Although it is still possible, it will require a large amount of money and a few years before it could be completed. These giant structures are so massive and astonishing that today, even with such great technology, we have not figured out how they were made. There have been assumptions that aliens or some supernatural creatures were involved in the making of these pyramids.

10. Why Pyramid was Built?

Since you know all about how many pyramids are there in the world and left today, note that the pyramids were built for the emperors and their afterlife. Ancient Egyptians were the first to believe in an afterlife. These massive pyramids were erected as a place of the king’s burial that served as his tomb. All the things that the king needed in the afterlife to sustain himself were also kept in these pyramids because it was believed that these material possessions could be carried in the next life.

The pyramids also have religious significance and were used as a place of worship by ancient Egyptians. Pyramids stand as the symbol of the glorification of life after death in Egypt. The ancient Egyptians saw death as the beginning of the journey to the other world. It is also said that the smooth angled sides of pyramids symbolized the rays of the sun. This was designed to make the king’s soul ascend directly to heaven and join the gods. (See What is Pyramid Symbology?)
