Night Sky is a 2022 science fiction drama series that premiered on Amazon Prime Video. The show follows elderly couple Irene and Franklin York, played by Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons, who discover a secret teleportation chamber in their backyard shed that leads to a deserted planet.
One of the supporting characters in Night Sky is the York’s nosy neighbor Byron, played by Adam Bartley. Byron becomes suspicious of the York’s strange behavior and secretive shed, eventually discovering the teleportation chamber and alien planet himself.
In the early episodes, Byron notices the Yorks making frequent late night trips to their backyard shed. He informs the York’s granddaughter Denise about this, worried for their well-being.
Byron later catches the Yorks red-handed entering the shed one night. He breaks into the shed soon after and discovers the hidden underground chamber with the portal to the alien planet.
Desperate to prove himself, Byron convinces Franklin to let him journey out onto the barren planet surface wearing diving gear. He excitedly explores the terrain, finding Irene’s teleported coffee table, before disappearing from view and radio contact.
What Happened to Byron?
In the season 1 finale, Franklin ventures out to search for Byron. He soon collapses, believing he will die after his air runs out. However, in a flashback he remembers discovering the chamber under his son’s childhood swing set.
Back in the present, Irene rescues the unconscious Franklin and they realize the planet has breathable air. Looking out over a ridge, they see a settlement in the distance – possibly the home of the mysterious cult that Jude escaped from.
So what happened to Byron? His fate is left unclear, but there are a few possibilities:
- He died after his oxygen ran out
- He reached the settlement and was captured or killed by its inhabitants
- He wandered farther, encountering alien civilizations
His discovery of the human settlement before losing contact suggests Byron ventured towards it to explore further. But if so, the violent and secretive nature of the cult makes his survival uncertain.

Ultimately Byron’s fate is a cliffhanger, left unknown to set up future storylines should Night Sky get a second season. His disappearance has dangerous implications for the Yorks if the settlement inhabitants discover and follow Byron’s trail back to Earth.
