The term lithosphere refers to the earth’s outermost, stony, rigorously built layer. Yes, this layer is located roughly 100 kilometres below the surface. 1. How is Lithosphere Formed?

The solid outermost shell of the Earth is called the lithosphere. Regular volcanic eruptions throughout the length of mid-ocean ridges create new oceanic lithosphere, which is then gradually pushed away from them. At subduction zones, the old oceanic lithosphere is destroyed when it subducts beneath the adjacent plates.
