Nowhere is a 2023 Spanish survival thriller film directed by Albert Pintó. It stars Anna Castillo as Mia, a pregnant woman trying to flee a dystopian totalitarian Spain to find refuge in Ireland.
The film is set in the near future where Spain has been taken over by a ruthless military dictatorship that is targeting pregnant women and children due to scarce resources.
1. What Happened to Uma?
Uma is Mia and Nico’s first daughter who was taken by the regime in Spain when Mia briefly let her play outside. Her fate after being captured is never explicitly confirmed, but it is implied she was likely killed given the regime’s violence towards women and children.
Mia feels guilty over what happened to Uma, though Nico insists it wasn’t her fault. The loss of Uma motivates their attempt to escape Spain.
2. How Were Mia and Nico Separated?
Mia and her husband Nico (Tamar Novas) decide to escape to Ireland by hiding in a shipping container that will be transported by sea. They manage to sneak into a shipping yard and hide inside one of the containers bound for Ireland.
Tragically, just before being loaded onto the ship, they get split up into separate containers.
3. What Happened to Mia’s Container?
On board the cargo ship, Mia discovers she is sharing her container with other refugees. However, when the container stops at a military checkpoint, soldiers open the container and massacre everyone inside, with only Mia surviving by hiding.
But everything starts to go downhill when the container carrying Mia falls into sea on a stormy night. This creates numerous holes in container from where the water started to seep in.
4. How Did Mia Survive for So Many Days at the Sea?
Alone in the container, Mia goes into labor as a violent storm strikes the ship. Fighting through immense pain, she gives birth underwater to a baby girl she names Noa.
Over the next few days, Mia utilizes the random assortment of items in the container – things like packaged electronics, bottled alcohol and packaged clothing – to ensure their survival.
She creates a makeshift drill to puncture a hole in the container roof so they can get out of the rising water. She fashions a fishing net out of earphones to catch fish. She even resorts to eating her own placenta to regain strength.
5. Did Nico Die?
In a heartbreaking conversation, Nico calls Mia to say goodbye, revealing he got shot on the ship and will soon die because of excessive bleeding.
6. Did Mia and Noa Survive? Ending Explained
Eventually the container springs a leak and starts sinking. Mia builds a small raft for Noa and ties herself to it as they drift aimlessly at sea.
After over 20 days adrift, as Mia nears death herself, an Irish fishing boat spots the raft and pulls them from the water. They perform CPR on unconscious Mia who eventually revives.
The final shot of Mia and Noa hugging on the Irish fishing boat is profoundly moving. The ending shows that despite everything Mia went through, she achieves what she set out to do – deliver her baby safely to Ireland away from the brutal regime in Spain.
The ending leaves the fate of Nico unknown, though it is implied he likely died from his gunshot wounds. Mia has lost her husband but gained the chance for a new life with Noa in Ireland.
