‘Infinite Storm’ True Story, Explained: Where Is Pam Bales Now?

The 2022 drama thriller ‘Infinite Storm’ depicts the heroic tale of Pam Bales, a search and rescue volunteer who risks her life to save a stranger during a blizzard on Mount Washington.

    1. Is it Based on a True Story?

It is indeed based on a true story chronicled in an article titled “High Places: Footprints in the Snow Lead to an Emotional Rescue”.

    2. What Had Happened to Pam Bales Daughters?

Pam Bales’ daughters died due to a gas leak in their cabin. In particular, we see Pam cradling her dead daughters, who died as a result of a gas leak in their cabin. (Pam survived because there was an open window nearby.

Her two young children died in a gas leak. She literally kissed her children goodnight, went to bed, and awoke in the hospital to be told that they had died.

So Pam’s two daughters, ages four and six, died as a result of a gas leak in the cabin where they were staying. Pam survived because she had an open window near where she was sleeping, but her daughters died tragically.

    3. What is the Plot of ‘Infinite Storm’

Pam Bales is an experienced hiker and nurse who often goes on solo hikes on Mount Washington to find solace from a past tragedy – the loss of her two daughters. On the anniversary of this personal tragedy, Pam decides to hike up Mount Washington in New Hampshire, despite warnings of an approaching blizzard.

On one such hike, she decides to turn back due to worsening weather but on her descent, Pam discovers tracks made by someone wearing only sneakers. She follows them and finds a young man who is barely conscious and severely underdressed for the conditions.

Pam names him “John” and takes it upon herself to rescue him, beginning a grueling journey down the mountain while battling extreme conditions.

Recognizing that he will likely die without intervention, Pam makes the decision to help John down the mountain before nightfall and the full force of the storm hits.

What follows is an intense journey of survival, as Pam supports, carries, and at times literally drags John’s body down treacherous slopes and through deep snow.

John is alternately dead weight, irrational, and actively resistant to Pam’s efforts. Along the way, both Pam and John experience traumatic flashbacks hinting at personal tragedy and loss.

Over the course of their descent, Pam and John form an emotional bond and reveal their tragic backstories to each other, finding common ground in their grief.

    4. What happens at the End of Infinite Storm?

Ultimately, Pam succeeds in bringing John to safety. In the aftermath, the two have an emotional conversation in which the parallels between their experiences of grief and suffering are made clear. While fictionalized, this scene reinforces the film’s themes of hope and finding meaning in helping others even in the darkest of times.

Infinite Storm ends with title cards explaining that Pam went on to continue rescue work, overcoming adversity and finding meaning in helping others. The near-death experience on the mountain transformed her outlook on life.

    5. Where is Pam Bales Now?

Pam Bales departed New Hampshire at the age of 67 and now volunteers to monitor national parks in the western United States. Pam realized that life needed to move on, and she went on to raise four lovely children.
