Eugene Ottinger, played by Moosa Mostafa, is one of the main characters in the hit Netflix series “Wednesday”. He is Wednesday Addams’ first real friend at Nevermore Academy and shares her passion for solving mysteries. However, Eugene almost meets a tragic end when he is viciously attacked by the Hyde monster in episode 4, leaving viewers wondering – does Eugene die in “Wednesday”?
Who Attacked Eugene in Wednesday?
In episode 4 titled “Woe What a Night”, Eugene and Wednesday decide to stakeout the Hyde’s cave together, hoping to gather evidence about the monster’s identity. However, Wednesday leaves Eugene alone at the stakeout to attend the Rave’N dance with her love interest, Tyler Galpin. Shortly after, the Hyde monster ambushes and violently attacks Eugene, leaving him bloodied and unconscious in the woods.
Wednesday has a psychic vision showing Eugene’s attack and immediately rushes to find him. She discovers his mangled body on the forest floor in a pool of blood. Eugene is still alive but barely clinging to life. Wednesday screams for help and the sheriff soon arrives on the scene along with paramedics who rush Eugene to the hospital.
Eugene in a Coma
At the end of episode 4, Eugene is shown lying in a hospital bed hooked up to machines, trapped in a coma. His face and arms are heavily bandaged, indicating serious injuries.
In episode 5, Wednesday and Thing visit an unconscious Eugene in the hospital. The doctors indicate that Eugene’s condition is still critical, and it remains unclear if he will ever wake up from the coma.
Wednesday feels intense guilt over what happened to Eugene, believing it was her fault for leaving him alone. She tells the comatose Eugene, “You didn’t deserve this. I should be in that bed.” Eugene’s mothers also visit him in the hospital, further indicating the seriousness of his condition and the uncertainty of his fate.
Signs of Hope
While Eugene’s coma appears dire, there are small signs of hope. His beloved pet bees are brought into his hospital room, indicating he still has strong ties to the living world. The school also holds a tribute for Eugene during Parents Weekend, with Principal Weems stating, “I’m happy to report that Eugene is on the mend and is expected to make a full recovery.”
So while Eugene’s condition initially appears very grim, by the final episode there are indications he will pull through after all.
Eugene Wakes Up
In the season 1 finale episode 8, Eugene’s fate is finally revealed. After Wednesday solves the Hyde mystery and defeats the villainous Gates family, she stops by the hospital again to check on Eugene one last time before leaving town. Here it is revealed that Eugene has finally woken up from his coma!
Wednesday apologizes to a bandaged but conscious Eugene for everything that happened. Eugene then provides a vital clue, revealing that the person who attacked him had red boots on. This helps Wednesday unravel that Marilyn Thornhill was secretly working with Tyler Hyde. Eugene is also seen being taken home by his mothers at the end of the episode, confirming that he ultimately survives.
What This Means for Season 2
While Eugene narrowly escapes death in season 1, his fate may not be sealed yet. The final scene of “Wednesday” shows the titular character receiving an ominous anonymous text saying “I’m watching you.” Attached is a disturbing gif showing a knife stabbing Wednesday through the head.
It’s unclear who sent this text, but it likely means a new villain will be stalking Wednesday in season 2. Could this put Eugene directly back in harm’s way? As Wednesday’s closest friend and crime-solving partner, Eugene could find himself again entangled in her dangerous mysteries. Perhaps he will even suffer another near fatal attack.
The show’s creators have said season 2 promises “scarier and supernatural” threats for Wednesday to face. This likely means the attacks and stakes will be higher next season, putting Eugene in greater peril. So while he narrowly survived season 1, Eugene may find himself once again fighting for his life in the next round of Wednesday Addams’ nightmarish adventures. His safety and survival are far from assured.
