Blood is a 2022 horror film directed by Brad Anderson and written by Will Honley. It stars Michelle Monaghan as Jess, a recovering addict and nurse who moves back into her childhood farmhouse with her two children, Owen (Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) and Tyler (Skylar Morgan Jones).
Shortly after moving into the farmhouse, the family dog runs off into the woods and returns days later acting strangely. The dog viciously attacks Owen, leaving him with a mysterious infection.
At the hospital, Owen makes a miraculous recovery after drinking blood from an IV bag. Jess realizes that blood is the only thing that can help Owen and begins stealing plasma from the hospital to secretly feed him.
When Jess can no longer access the hospital’s supply, she resorts to draining her own blood and killing animals to satisfy Owen’s escalating bloodlust.
Eventually, Jess kidnaps a terminally ill hospital patient named Helen (June B. Wilde) and keeps her captive in the basement to drain her blood. Jess hides this from everyone, including her daughter, while struggling to care for Owen as his condition worsens.
Blood Ending Explained
By the end of the film, Owen has fully transformed into a vampire-like creature. After Helen escapes and is killed by Owen, Jess’ ex-husband Patrick becomes suspicious of her behavior. He calls child services and takes custody of the children.
While staying at Patrick’s house, Owen nearly kills his baby half-sister. Tyler realizes that the root of Owen’s transformation lies with the cursed tree near their farmhouse. She takes Owen back there, hoping to cure him by burning down the tree.
Jess arrives just as Owen is about to attack Tyler. After a struggle, Jess is forced to drown Owen in the mud underneath the demonic tree, finally killing her son. The authorities rule Owen’s death an accident, but Jess still loses custody of Tyler for being an unfit parent.
In the final scene, Jess burns down the cursed tree, the implied source of the evil that corrupted Owen. She is then seen adopting a new dog, hinting that the demonic presence from the woods now resides in this animal.
