The 5 physical factors of ecology are climate, topography, biotic factors, limiting forces, and edaphic forces.

  • Climate: The climate of an ecosystem includes temperature, light, wind, water, rainfall, and humidity. These factors affect the ecosystem directly and have a direct impact on the organisms and the biotic factors too.
  • Topography: Topography includes the land, mountain, valleys, slopes, and everything that is related to the land use of the ecosystem. These factors are also important in an ecosystem.
  • Biotic factors: Biotic factors are the living factors in an ecosystem. They interact with the nonliving or abiotic factors present in the environment. The biotic factors include animals, plants, microorganisms, insects, and other living things.
  • Limiting forces: Limiting factors are the factors that control the excess of anything in an ecosystem. It can be anything like food, temperature, mate, etc. These factors are important to put a certain limit on things and prevent them from being excessive. One such example of this factor is the population of animals.
  • Edaphic factors: Edaphic is any property of soil that defines it. The properties can be physical, chemical and biological which define the composition of the soil of that region. These properties can define the soil to be acidic or alkaline and accordingly affect the growth and plantation in that region.

  • Population ecology: Population ecology studies the population and its different factors. Genetic composition, size, growth, and fluctuations in any population are studied in this ecology.
  • Global ecology: Global ecology studies the biosphere of the Earth. The different elements of the environment such as land, water, and air, and their relations with one another and how they interact are studied in this type of ecology.

The physical factors that affect the ecology or the environment are:

  • Soil: Soil is an important physical factor that affects the environment. It forms the upper layer of the Earth and everything is situated on it. Soil is the fertile layer where plants and trees grow. Animals and other microorganisms also live in the soil.
  • Temperature: Temperature is the criteria for heat or cold in the environment. It affects the lifestyles of humans and the life of other organisms too. Plants also get affected by fluctuations in temperature.
  • Climate: Climate is the weather condition of an area for a longer period of time. The climate of a region affects its population, lifestyle, and biotic factors that are present there.
  • Water: Water is one of the most important factors affecting the environment. With no water, survival will be a question. Every organism needs water to survive and hence, it is a major physical factor of the environment.
