1 A Brief History
The Gap, Inc. is a worldwide clothing and accessory retailer from the United States of America. Stylized as GAP, it is more commonly referred to as Gap or Gap Inc. It was founded by Donald Fisher and his wife, Doris F. Fisher in 1969. It has its headquarters in San Fransisco and operates in six major divisions- The namesake banner Gap, Athleta, Hill City, Intermix, Old Navy, and Banana republic.
The gap is regarded as the most prominent specialty retailer in America and is third in all the international locations. H&M is on the top followed by Inditex Group and then, Gap. The company operates around 3,727 stores across the world, out of which 2,406 are in America. As of 2008, about 135,000 employees are working under the company.
2 How did it Get its Name?
The name 'Gap' was suggested by Doris Fisher, the co-founder of the company and Donald Fisher's wife. It originated from the growing distance and differences between adults and children, known as the 'generation gap', which was at its peak around the hippie movement. The generation gap was one of the most talked-about issues of that time, and hence, Doris Fisher derived the name from this. It describes the social, ethical, as well as intellectual gulf developing between the parents and the youngsters.
The notion of Gap being an acronym for ‘Gay and Proud’ holds no truth and is merely an urban myth. Donald Fisher, got the inspiration for opening the first jeans-only store, owing to his frustrations as a buyer. Fisher was having a hard time shopping for jeans and kept moving from shop to shop to get his hands on jeans that suited his taste. No one store housed all the brands, and it was extremely difficult to shuffle through locations just for a pair of jeans.
3 The Logo of the Company
Gap Inc. has the trademark of its name, 'Gap'. The original trademark of the company was a service marker for the storage services that sold retail clothing. The Gap logo was first used on the 23rd of August, 1969 while it was commercially used on the 17th of October, 1969. The gap came up with a new logo on the 4th of October, 2010. Helvetica font was used for designing the new logo, and the prominence of the iconic blue box of the brand was reduced. After receiving a massive public outcry, Gap went back to its previous logo on the 12th of October. The new logo was in use for not even a week. Executive Marka Hansen, who was overseeing the logo change, went on to resign on the 1st of February, the next year.
4 Gap’s International Presence
The company which started off just as an only-jeans store now sells a huge variety of clothes and accessories all across the world. It has its company-operated shops in Mexico, Canada, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, China, Taiwan, India, Japan, Ireland, Italy, and so on. More than 40 countries have stores of Old Navy, Gap, Intermix, Athleta, and Banana Republic. In May 2016, the company announced the shut down of all its Old Navy Stores located in Japan. It came as a response to Old Navy's low Q1 performance as well as consistent losses throughout the organization. In 2017, it went on to shut down all of its seven stores in Israel. In the year 2018, it shut down all its stores located in Australia.
