Which one should you buy: PS4 or PS4 Pro?
All the real video-games freak have 2 choices- the old and brilliant PS4, or the more robust, updated, and expensive PS4 pro. It might be a tough decision for you; however, we will help you decisively make your choice after considering the following factors-
The original PS4 has 2 layers separated by a gap for the disc drive. However, PS4 Pro has 3 layers and 2 USB ports similar to the original PS4. The dimensions of both the Playstations did not experience much difference as the original PS4 measures 275.1 x 305.1 x 53.1 mm, while the Pro measures 295 x 327 x 55 mm.
If you plan to hook up a Playstation VR, the PS4 Pro offers an additional USB 3.0 port (unlike the original PS4) which is very useful since the headset needs to be plugged in the USB port. Although, the rear connectors of both the Playstations were identical.
Another difference seen in the original and pro model is the HDMI port on the console’s back. The original PS4 is equipped with an HDMI 1.4 port, while the Pro has an HDMI 2.0 port allowing it to output at 4k resolutions.
3) Games Performance
Both the consoles share the same CPU- AMD Jaguar x86-64 8-core, experiencing a 30% boost in its clock speed from 1.6 GHz to 2.1 GHz. Meanwhile, the Pro’s model GPU is equipped with much better power which has been boosted from 800 MHz to 911 MHz. This bump was to bolster the 4k functionality in the Pro model.
The Bluetooth has also seen an upgrade from v2.1 to v4.0, and the Wi-Fi has been included to 802.11ac. Moreover, the PS4 is featured with an additional 1GB DDR3 RAM, enhancing the gaming experience.
The standard PS4 comes in 500 GB and 1 TB variants, while PS4 Pro can only be bought in 1TB variant. Both the models use Sony’s cloud storage as well, which means when you have a PlayStation Subscription, you can store the games and other files in Sony Cloud.
5) 4K HDR Gaming
The standard PS4 does not support and cannot run games at 4k resolutions, while the Pro model supports all the games to run at up to (3840 x 2160) 4k resolutions.
6) Optical Drive
The Pro model is not featured with the Ultra-HD Blu-ray player. However, it can play Full HD 1080p Blu-ray discs but the same way as the standard PS4. This is quite disappointing as the Pro model was expected to release with Ultra HD Blu-ray support.
7) 4K TV performance
The Pro model supports 4K/HDR output instead of the standard PS4 that supports HDR/ Full HD 1080p resolution.
8) 1080p TV Performance
The Pro console will not merely give a graphical boost on 4K televisions but also if you are playing on a 1080p screen. It has been analysed and revealed that you would not face any issues with the PS nor the TV even if you force a game to run on 1080p mode on a PS4 Pro by changing the system settings.
9) Boost Mode
Boost Mode is a feature allowing all PS4 games that cannot be played or haven’t received a Pro match to receive a performance boost when played on the new console. After enabling this feature, the performance is boosted by 38%.
10) Playstation VR
An improved PSVR experience is offered in PS4 Pro consoles, unlike the standard PS4 models. The developers released Pro models after extensive research, super-sampling techniques, effectively rendering games at a higher resolution to enhance detail levels.
The standard PS4 500GB is retailed at $300, and to purchase a 1TB variant, and you need to spend $350. The PS4 Pro is quite expensive because of its advanced features, due to which its price is kept at $400.
What difference does HDR make?
High Dynamic Range (HDR) is used to make films, games, or TV more colourful, real, and brighter. Before HDR, old standard TV’s used to be designed for CRT TVs and cinema screens. HDR allows TV to enhance customer experience by making them perceive the picture closer to real-life. However, to enjoy the HDR experience, you must have a TV supporting the HDR feature. Is it possible to use a PS4 Pro on a TV that does not support a 4K HDR resolution?
It is not a requisite to have a 4K HDR to TV to use PS4 Pro, but it is recommended for having a seamless experience. The reason is that some games are designed through a method called Supersampling that improves the graphics for players on 1080p TV, but not all. This is why people generally do not prefer to upgrade from PS4 To PS4 Pro until they upgrade their TV to 4K.
