Ever wondered what is metal made of? Metals are natural substances and are studied in all three branches of science, i.e., physics, biology, and chemistry.

1. What is the Definition of Metal?

A metal is a material that inhabits almost everywhere imaginable. It exists either in a physical form or in the form of molecules in a body, depending on the nature and the subjects that it has been referred to. Metals are often, polished or prepared under intensive heat to make them lustrous. They are also good conductors of heat and electricity. Metal breaks if hammered and can be turned into wires, these properties are known as malleability and ductility. Metal is available in abundance in our bodies and on the earth’s crust. What is metal made of? Everything, when it comes down to it, is an atom. Metal is basically many atoms that are bonded together to form molecules. Though, these molecules form a bond with each other in certain kind of ways that makes them behave differently from one another. So, an iron element and a gold element, both are constituted of atoms. They fall under the category of metals, have a different molecular structure.

Metal is changed into a different substance or structure under high temperatures. The temperature and malleability are dependent upon the density or how tightly the molecules are held together with one another. 3. What is the History of Metal?

The Bronze Age, the Silver Age, and the Golden Age acquired their titles by the specific time period when these metals were found. Copper is said to be the first metal that was found on earth. Bronze, the second metal to be discovered, is considered to be found when humankind had developed communication within social groups. When bronze was first discovered, it had an expensive value. 4. What is Metal in Biology?

Metals can be found everywhere and in different forms as rings, in cars, and in buildings. Everything is constituted of metals, and that includes our bodies as well. Even though metals only make up about 2.5% of the body, it still plays an important role. To simplify, metal gives us the energy to do physical tasks like eat, run, breathe. 5. What is Metal in Chemistry?

Chemistry has a completely different and detailed definition of metal, as does physics. Chemistry defines metal as a substance with malleability, luster, and high electrical conductivity. Metal can be a chemical element like Iron, an alloy like Stainless Steel, or a molecular compound like Polymeric Sulfur Nitride. Metals can otherwise be defined by their position on the Periodic Table. There are 94 metals on the periodic table, mainly classified under these four categories:

  • Alkali metals
  • Alkaline earth metals
  • Transition metals
  • Rare earth metals
