America was made of 13 colonies which could be classified into three, one of them being the Southern Colonies. Founded by the British in the 16th century this comprised modern-day Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. They came into existence with the sole motive of making more money through farms and plantations. The three types of colonial governments classified are:

  • Royal Colonies: These were colonies wherein the British crown appointed a governor and a council. The representative assembly was elected by the people.
  • Proprietary Colonies: The proprietary governments are where certain colonies were given to groups or individuals by the English Monarchy to be administered.
  • Self-governing Colonies: A government wherein the elected rulers have the freedom to make most decisions without referral to the colonial power.

A government wherein the elected rulers have the freedom to make most decisions without referring to the British crown. Most of these self-governing colonies have a responsible government. The proprietary governments are when certain colonies were given to groups or individuals by the English Monarchy to be administered. They were granted full rights of the colony and were a form of self-government. An example of this could be Maryland under the Southern Colonies government. The province of North Carolina was what is known as a Constitutional Monarchy. It was also the first among others to instruct the delegates to vote for their independence from British rule.
