Different heavenly bodies have different characteristics and features. Though every star looks the same, it is not the case. Similarly, the mass and density of these objects also vary greatly. Like if you talk about the moon and earth, do you think they have similar weights? Let us today find out about the weight of earth and moon along with the weight of moon in kg and weight of earth in kg.

1. Earth

It is the planet you live on which is also known as the blue planet. It is the third planet from the sun and the only astronomical object where life exists. Earth revolves around the sun and rotates on its axis. Also, check out where is the Center of the Earth Located?

2. Moon

It is a small, spherical rocky body with a metallic core. It revolves around the earth, and it is the only natural satellite that the earth has. The moon has no light of its own, and it reflects the light of the sun, therefore you can see it shining.

3. Size of Earth and Moon

At the equator, the diameter of the earth is 12,756 km (7926 miles) while its circumference is 40,075 km (24,901 miles). The moon has a diameter of about 3479 km (2162 miles), which is about ¼ of the diameter of the earth. Also, check out how many times bigger is Earth than the Moon?

4. Composition of Earth and Moon

Earth consists of all forms of matter, namely solid, liquid and gasses. Whereas, the moon has only a rocky surface with no water and hardly any air. To know more about it, check out what makes up the Lithosphere?

5. Amount of Solid and Liquid on Earth

The mass of the earth determines the percentage of solids and liquids present in it. Oxygen present in the atmosphere of the earth combines with different substances to produce solid and liquid compounds. In the process of knowing the weight of earth and moon, take a look at the list of elements here.

  • Titanium 0.05%
  • Sulfur 1.9%
  • Nickel 2.4%
  • Magnesium 12.7%
  • Silicon 15.2%
  • Oxygen 29.5%
  • Iron 34.6%

Silicon Dioxide SiO2 is sand which is also a major component of the earth. Iron is even found in the core of the earth which is responsible for the magnetic field of the earth. (See How many Hemispheres on Earth?)

6. Atmosphere of Earth

It is the most suited atmosphere for living beings to survive. The atmosphere of the earth has the perfect blend of gases.

7. Atmosphere of Moon

Helium, Hydrogen, and Neon are the main gases found in the atmosphere of the moon. Argon 40 was also detected on the moon, and it seems to increase during the seismic activity on the moon. Also, methane, ammonia, water, and carbon dioxide are found in small quantities.

8. Gravity of Earth and Moon

The gravitational force pulls things towards the earth, therefore, the oceans, atmosphere, and gases everything is held by the earth. There is considerably less gravitational force on the moon. It cannot attract things towards the surface with high pressure like earth. Therefore, astronauts seem to float on the moon despite of the weight of earth and moon. The absence of an atmosphere is also responsible for the loss of its gases on the surface of the moon.  Also, check out what is Revolution and Rotation?

9. Weight of Earth and Moon

The weight of earth and moon here will be considered based on the mass of these two solar bodies. The mass of the earth is 5.97237× 1024 kg (1.31668× 1025 Lb). The weight of the moon is 7.34767309 × 1022 kilograms. (See In The Airline World, How Is 23 Kg Equal To 50 Pounds?)

10. Weight of Moon in kg

The weight of the moon is about 1.2% of the weight of the earth. The average weight of the moon in kilograms can be achieved by 7.34767309 × 1022 kilograms. (See How many grams are in 1 pound?)

11. Weight of Earth in kg

Similarly, the earth is about 80 times heavier than the moon. Also, you can get to the weight of Earth in kg is given by, 5.972 × 1024 kg. The mass of both the solar bodies is calculated through Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation

12. Distance of Moon from Earth

Moon is the nearest celestial object to the earth. It is about 384,400 km (239,000 m) far away from the earth.  (Also read  What is the Third Planet closest to the Sun?)

13. Temperature of Moon and Earth

The average temperature of the surface of the moon during the day is 107 degrees Celsius (224.6 Fahrenheit) and at night it goes down to -153 degrees Celsius (-243.4 Fahrenheit). The average temperature of the surface of the earth can be 13.9 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit). However, the lowest temperature on the surface of the earth can be -59.2 degrees Celsius (-128.6 Fahrenheit) and the highest surface temperature can be 56.7 degrees Celsius (134 degrees Fahrenheit).
