1. Moon

It is most popularly known as the natural satellite of the Earth. It is about one-quarter of the earth’s size.   • Size includes the diameter which is about 2162 m (3479 km).
  • The mass of the moon is about 1/80 of the total mass of the Earth, which means it is 7.34767309 × 1022 kilograms. 
  • The density of the moon is about 3340 kg /m³.
  • The temperature on the surface of the moon is 107° Celsius (Fahrenheit) during the day. A temperature this high is enough to boil all the water on the earth. While at night the temperature drastically falls to -153° Celsius (Fahrenheit).

3. Motion of Moon

Before moving towards the weight of an object on the moon, understand its motion. The moon revolves around the Earth in an elliptical orbit. It completes one revolution in 27.3 days. The gravitational force of the moon affects the Earth in such a way that the oceans are pulled towards the moon. This pulling and pushing of oceans by the moon and earth cause tides. The Sun is also responsible for causing tides because you can witness the highest tides when the Sun and the Moon are aligned. This alignment happens on a full moon and a new moon. 6. Definition of Mass and Weight

The quantity of matter in a body or the body’s inertia is known as mass. The weight of an object is the force acting on it due to gravitational force. In simple words, the force of attraction of the earth on an object is known as the weight of the object. Weight is denoted by W and mass is denoted by m. 7. Weight of an Object on the Moon

The moon has less gravitational force than the earth, therefore the force exerted by the moon to attract things is also lower than earth. This is the reason the weight of any object, person, or thing will be less on the moon. For example, a cabinet weighs about 110 pounds (50 kilograms) on earth, but its weight on the moon will only be 18.33 pounds (40.41 kilograms). 8. Weight of an Object on the Surface of Moon

The gravitational force by which the moon is attracting the object to its surface is the weight of an object on its surface. Since the moon is exerting fewer pressures the weight of the object will be floating on the surface. This is the reason why astronauts float on the surface of the moon. 9. Weight on Moon Calculator

To find the weight of the object on the moon you can use the universal law of gravitation or Newton’s law of universal gravitation. The formula states Wm = (G × M × m × m) / (R²m).

Let’s say the weight of an object is 10 N on earth. To calculate it another way, we have,

  • Weight of an object on the moon (Wm) = (1/6) × (its weight on the earth).
  • Wm = We/6
  • Wm= 10N/6

10. Calculating Density of Moon

To calculate the density of moon, use the basic formula of density:

Density = mass/volume, (d=m/v)
