1. What is Snow?

The tiny ice crystals are the solid form of precipitation that falls from the sky during the snowfall. It is technically frozen water that looks like tiny cotton pieces or snowflakes. (See What causes Double Rainbow?)

2. How is Snow formed?

Evaporation takes place continuously due to solar heating. The water vapor rising from various water bodies on the earth has less density than the atmospheric air. After reaching higher in the atmosphere, the air loses its capacity to hold water vapor. Now, the air is overloaded with water vapor, and this state is termed a supersaturated state. 7. What happens if the Temperature is above Freezing Point?

Snowflakes need a temperature below 0 degrees Celsius to remain in their shape, but if the temperature is more than that, then they will start melting. 8. What Weather Conditions cause Snow?

The conditions suitable for the snowfall are,

  • Snowing requires cold weather but not always.
  • As mentioned above, it can snow if the region is warmer. Because warmer air can hold more water vapor, there are more chances of snowfall shortly in such regions.
  • Snow formation needs moisture.

Everything is dependent on the temperature during the snowfall.

  • Snow can be small and powdery that does not stick with others or to any other surface it touches.

11. How does Dry and Wet Snow form?

If the air is cool and dry, then the snow particles will be small and powdery. This type of snow is known as dry snow, the one that you have seen in snow sports.

If the air and temperature are warm, likely above freezing point, then the snow particles will melt around the corners and stick together. This sticky ice is known as wet ice. 12. What happens to the Snow Particles after they fall?

After a snowfall, the snowflakes or particles may evaporate. There are chances that they may stay in the same shape for long periods. But there are chances of changes in their size, texture, and shape if snowfall persists.

13. What is the Largest Size a Snowflake can get?

Usually, snowflakes are very small, up to 1.3 cm (0.5 inches) in diameter. But their size is affected by several conditions, like,

  • Unstable atmospheric conditions,
  • Near-freezing temperatures, and
  • Light winds.

14. What are the Other Types of Snowfall?

Snow can fall in different forms, like ice crystals, hail, pellets, snow grains, and snow pellets. (See What are Rubies made of?)

  • Ice crystals are often seen in areas with low stable temperatures. It is in the form of needles and is also known as diamond dust.
  • Ice pellets are in two forms; one is sleet and the other is small hail. Both of these are irregular spherical. Sleet forms snowflakes as it falls, while small hail turns into ice pellets.
  • Hail is irregular ice spheres formed in cumulonimbus clouds. They can be 5 mm or more in size.
  • During snowing in the mountains, snow grain, a long-flat cluster of ice crystals is formed in stratus clouds. it is also known as granular snow. It is less than 1 mm in size and has a glaze coating with a rime core. They are experienced in small quantities and do not fall in showers.
  • Snow pellets are conical or spherical ice particles, similar to the structure of a snowflake. Such ice is formed at or below freezing point by the amassing of super-cooled droplets. 15. What is the Intensity of Snowfall?

The intensity of snowfall can be characterized by the visibility during the snowfall.

  • Visibility of 1 kilometer (about 1100 yards) or more means, light snow.
  • Visibility between 0.5 km (550 yards) and 1 km (1100 yards) means, moderate snow.

16. What does Snowing in the Mountains mean in Literature?

This term is used as imagery to describe someone with white, gray, or silver hair. The silvering of hair can be due to aging or otherwise. For example, you do not seem to be aging at all, even with all that snow on the mountains. Here, the sentence means to say that, the person is aging and has white hair. But their active routine does not reflect that.
