How many species are there?
This research is ongoing for ages, but the answer to it is still not accurate. As per experts, around 1 million 600 thousand species have been described, but the planet would have more than 10 million species. As per a study, 86% of the land species and 91% of the sea species have not been discovered yet.
Can you count the number of animals around?
If someone asks you to count the number of animals around, you would consider it an easy task. As you can easily count the number of pets at your place and around, but what about the squirrels, birds, insects, ants, rats, and flies. It might seem impossible to count each one of them. In fact, there would be so many living in the water as well; how will you count them? It is an almost impossible task to count the animals.
Estimates on the animal count
Many animals are too small to see, but scientists tried hard to count all the species alive. Before we think of the count, the fact is that we are not aware of how many animals are there in the World. But as per them, there are around 8.7 million species on earth, of which 1-2 million are animals. Scientists have managed to document only 14% of the living species.
Which species are more than the animals?
You would be surprised to know that chickens’ count is more than humans as it is 18 million. The count of cattle is 1.4 billion, and sheep is 1.1 billion. There are more than 10,000 trillion ants alive, and the total insect population is 10 billion.
Finding new species is easy but categorizing them is a really tough job. Scientists have to take their samples, check the DNA, and find out their classification lineage. This is a very time-consuming process and involves a lot of research.
But there is a bigger issue than this, which is extinction. As per a report in 2018, the list of threatened species was shocking as it includes thousands of species. Therefore, it is almost impossible to get an exact count of the animals around the World.
