Mauch Chunk Railway was the railway that performed dual duties as the charcoal mover in the mornings and a joy ride throughout the afternoon. It was built in 1827 to transport coal between coalfields over a distance of nine miles.

Gravity dragged the one-and-a-half-ton coal cars down after unloading done by animals. It could travel at a speed of 50 miles per hour through the Lehigh valley even with so much weight.
