An element is a pure chemical substance composed of atoms of only one type. The elements are organized in the periodic table according to the atomic number which indicates their similar properties. For example, carbon and oxygen are both found in the atmosphere as diatomic gases, CO and O2. Each molecule of CO or O2 consists of one atom of carbon or oxygen. The composition of a compound is always constant. Moreover, the smallest particle of most compounds is found in the form of a molecule. A compound is basically a pure chemical substance formed when more than one type of atom is combined. Mostly compounds are found in science as a result of chemical reactions where elements and molecules are the participants too. For example, water is a compound because it contains two kinds of atoms which are hydrogen and oxygen. In each molecule of water, there are two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. 3. How are Elements and Compounds Similar?

Elements and compounds are both made of atoms, but atoms of different elements can be combined to form compounds. For example, hydrogen and oxygen can be combined to form water (H2O).
