1. Origin of the term Movie

2. Stanford and his Initiative

The first attempt to show a picture in motion was to prove a point which was made by Leland Stanford. He was an American politician and industrialist. He and his wife were the founders of Stanford University, California.

  • Stanford was so interested in horses and horse races that he owned a Gridley tract. He bred, trained, and raced the horses on his ranch. His level of interest in art and science was the same, just like horses. He wanted to show the movement of a horse’s feet in motion.

3. Definition of  Horse in Motion

Before the first full length movie ever made, photographer Eadweard Muybridge took several pictures of the running horses. To capture every movement of the horse hooves, the cameras were placed at different angles.

  • Stanford selected his favorite horse for this shoot, named Occident. Muybridge arranged the pictures accordingly, and after several attempts, he succeeded in getting the desired result.
  • He arranged six cards, and each card shows six to twelve arranged photographs. This arrangement shows the movement of the horse. And with the continuous movement of cards, the pictures seem to move like a video. (Also read Do Penguins Have Knees?)

4.  List of First few Silent Movies

  • A French inventor and photographer, Louis Le Prince, directed the silent film on October 14, 1888. It was named Roundhay Garden Scene, 1888. There were only four members in the cast and the film was shot in Oakwood Grange in Roundhay, Leeds, North England. It consists of 20 frames per second.
  • In 1896, on January 25, another French movie was directed by Louis Lumière and Auguste Lumière with the title, Arrival of a Train. It was among the first steps towards the first full length movie ever made. The duration of the short film was 50 seconds and was one continuous real-time shot. The everyday life of people boarding the train at a station is shown in the movie. 
  • The first silent Indian feature movie was Raja Harishchandra, released on April 21, 1913. Dadasaheb Phalke did direction, screenplay, editing, and production. He is popularly known as the Father of Indian cinema. The length of the movie was 40 minutes, and it also had only four cast members.

5. First Movie ever Made in Color

  • Although it is considered a lost treasure, scientists and silent movie stars created a technicolor production movie. It was America’s feature-length color romantic movie named The Gulf Between, premiered on September 13, 1917. 
  • Until 1918, all movies were silent and grayscale because color lenses were not developed. Cupid Angling was another silent movie directed by Louis W. Chaudet in the United States of America. It is the only feature film colored using the technique of Douglas’s Natural Color Process.

6. First Movie ever Made with Sound

The movies with sound were known as Talkies, talking pictures, or sound films. The concept and technology of sound in the movie were introduced in several parts of the world between 1926 and 1930. The development of electronic sound recording technologies made it easier for filmmakers to input sound into motion pictures. The era of silent movies finally came to an end in 1920. 7. First Full Length Movie ever Made

The Story of Kelly Gang was a movie based on exploits faced by people during the 19th century. This movie was shot in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and released on December 26, 1906, under the direction of Charles Tait. It was the first full length movie ever made in the history of movies. 8. First ever Animation Movie

Talking about movies and missing out on everyone’s favorite, which is animation movies, will not be accepted. So, in 1908, a French cartoonist, Emile Cohl, released his creation with the name Fantasmagorie (a fantasy) under the production of Gaumont.
