Sometimes you feel like doing something for others after seeing someone else doing it. You feel happy and warm as your chest swells up doing a good deed. You all must have been in this situation and felt this way but do you know what that feeling of self elevation was? In this article, we will explain the elevation feeling and why do we feel this elevation experience when doing something good.
1. What is Self Elevation?
It is the warm feeling that warms your heart after you have done something out of gratitude for someone else. Even after knowing that the other person may not be able to return your favor, you did it. You might have been inspired by others to do this kind of act, but whatever the reason maybe you did it and you felt elevated.
A good example of this is when you attend a charity event without being interested in it. However, as soon as you start giving away things in the event as charity and see the wide smiles on the face of people, your heart swells up. (Also read What is Priming Theory?)
2. What is the Elevation Theory of Haidt?
Jonathan Haidt described elevation in the context of three dimensions of social cognition. According to him, self-elevation is the opposite of the feeling of disgust. For example, when you see someone rising on the ladder of success, you feel elevated like them. You are not disgusted or jealous of their success. It is called self-elevation. 3. What is the Broaden and Build Theory?
Barbara Fredrickson, an American psychology professor, proposed the broaden and build theory in 1998. It contains information about how human emotions expand optimistically during self-elevation. According to her, the elevation has the capability to spread because when individuals see others doing good deeds, they feel the urge to do the same. 4. Which Emotions are related to Praising?
Sara Algoe and Haidt in their theory claim that gratitude, admiration, and self-elevation are the three emotions of praising others. All these emotions are focused on the other person. Elevation motivates you to be more open in showing gratitude to others. You are encouraged to become kinder and more generous and your actions help others and not yourself. (See How to Heal Yourself Emotionally?)
5. Is Elevation different from Happiness?
The impulses caused by self-elevation are different from those of happiness. You must have noticed that when you are happy you are more focused and interested in internal pursuits. But you are self-elevated, you focus on others. (See Woes of the Bored and Lonely Mind)
6. Does it affect Nursing and Affection?
Pregnancy and motherhood develop many feelings in women. Oxytocin is a hormone related to sexual activity, reproduction, and breastfeeding. Social psychologists, Jonathan Haidt and Jennifer Silvers carried out a study on lactating mothers and their children. After the study, they concluded that the mothers who watched videos related to self-elevation have a possible physiological mechanism and were more likely to cuddle and nurse their babies, which indicates an increase in Oxytocin. 7. Does it Improve Social Behavior?
Simone Schnall conducted two studies and concluded that people who watched the elevation videos were more active and helpful which leads them to be much leaner toward their duties. Meanwhile, the group watching other kinds of videos was not interested or felt the urge to help others. (See Importance of Books in Our Life)
8. Can it Help Distressed People?
According to a survey, when clinically distressed people experience elevation, they tend to become more outgoing towards people and help others. They also get less involved in interpersonal conflicts and even their symptoms of distress reduce. This kind of behavior of such people motivates others to help them and make them feel better. (See What to Do When You Feel Like a Failure?)
9. How is it Applicable in the Workplace?
Every organization wants a self-elevated environment for the smooth functioning of its offices. But it is the responsibility of the employer to make the staff elevated. It can have the following benefits:
- Employees will be more disciplined.
- Sense of moral behavior toward their superiors will be strengthened in them.
- They will respond more optimistically.
- They will inspire self-elevation in their colleagues.
The benefits are plenty and according to a study conducted in 2010, Jonathan Haidt and Elisa Maria Galliani observed that it is the best practice for the success of an organization. (Also read How to Deal with Difficult People at Work?)
10. How is it Related to Altruistic Behavior?
When you are concerned about the welfare of others at the cost of your own happiness, it is termed altruistic behavior. The elevation will make you do many things which are not beneficial to you but are helpful to others. For example, volunteering for unpaid research or study. After seeing you, others will also be encouraged to do the same and the chain will continue. In some ways, it is similar to leading others with your own example, but in this case, you are not aware that you are inspiring others. (See Internal Vs External Locus of Control)
11. Does it Increases Spirituality?
When you are more concerned about the spirit or soul of a person rather than the material or physical things related to them, you are said to be spiritual. Self-elevation enables you to see the world differently. It appears as a benevolent place, your faith in goodness among people increases and you find life more meaningful. Researchers have observed great changes, due to self-elevation, in the spirituality of people who were not religious. (See What is Human Existence In Philosophy?)
12. What are the Other Benefits of the Elevation Experience?
Self-elevation can be helpful in the following ways.
- You will experience improved physical and mental health.
- You will be less affected by stress and negativity. (See The body language signs of stress)
- You will learn to identify and focus on the good aspects of your life and be thankful for them.
- You will inspire others to feel the same through your actions.
You now understand the elevation experience and how it motivates you to help others unconditionally. Share this information with others and spread the feeling the warmth. (See 10 Golden Rules of Life)
