Why didn't Bryce Walker get the tapes - 13 Reasons Why

  • 1 To prevent their destruction

Clay might have believed that Bryce was going to destroy the tapes if they reached him. Clay might have decided to skip Bryce's turn to preserve the tapes.

  • 2 Bryce was the main reason Hannah died

  • 3 Bryce would have stopped their circulation

Even though Hannah made several tapes, it was still very clear that Bryce was the main reason that motivated Hannah to commit suicide. Since Bryce's reaction could have been unpredictable, Clay chose to bypass him.

  • 4 Bryce would have closed the case

Once Bryce realizes that he is being accused of killing Hannah, he would have done every possible thing to close the case and escape from punishment. In addition to that, his wealthy family could have helped him do it.

  • 5 He might not have confessed

If Bryce was given the tapes then Clay might have not been able to make him confess his crime. Clay might have decided to bypass Bryce in order to get his confession.

  • 6 To pay for his crimes

Clay wanted Bryce to pay for his crimes and he thought that the best way to do it was by not letting him know about the tapes and instead record his confession on one of them.

  • 7 He wouldn't have changed

Clay might have believed that the tapes would have never affected Bryce in a positive way. Bryce doesn't think he did anything wrong and so the tapes would have never helped him.

  • 8 Clay wanted Mr. Porter to get them

Clay knew that Mr. Porter was responsible for Hannah's death to a certain extent. He wanted to make sure that the tapes are going to reach him. He might have believed that Bryce would never pass them on.
